Apple Watch gets the price drop you were hoping for: Now starts at $299

One of the biggest issues many consumers had with the Apple Watch was the matter of cost: It was just a bit too pricey.
Apple apparently heard some of those concerns and on Monday decided to drop the price of the Apple Watch. The new price of the entry-level Apple Watch is a more affordable $299, down $50.

Sure, that's not a huge drop, but by Apple standards the price decrease is significant. The pricing change was immediately met with applause by audience members and knowing smirks in the form of the social media commentary hinting that the new price is what Apple should have priced it at all along.

Next to function (what do I actually use it for?), the biggest issue surrounding Apple's first wearable has been price. With the top tier Apple Watch Edition selling for $17,000, it might seem like the entry-level Apple Watch would be considered a steal at just $349. But with competing devices like the Fitbit offered for just $249, some found the entry-level build quality versus pricing to be a bit much.
In a time when wearing a wristwatch that hovers near the $400 to $500 mark is still considered a fairly pricey accessory, asking consumers to shell out anywhere near that for an iPhone accessory they're not e even sure they need was, for some, asking too much for even the most hardcore Apple faithful.
And while we still don't know just how well or poorly the Apple Watch did in terms of sales (Apple keeps those numbers hush hush), with the new pricing, the company is likely hoping to drum up more sales for its first and only wearable product.
